Department of Agricultural Botany
Introduction of Department of Agricultural Botany:
In the present scenario, the world is globally suffering from pandemic diseases like COVID-19 hence scientifically understanding of organisms essential. The current population of India is estimated to be more than 1.28 billion. India is the most densely populated country in the world after China but it would be at top position within 2040 years. It would be very difficult to feed such a huge population in the future. In this context knowledge of agricultural botany will be useful to increase production.
The Department of Agricultural Botany has excellent well equipped modern facilities for efficient teaching various courses related to Genetics & Plant Breeding, Biotechnology, Crop Physiology, and Seed Technology as required for B.Sc. (Agri.) degree. Department is engaged in imparting theoretical as well as practical knowledge to the students. During four years of B.Sc. (Agri.) tenure courses environmental science, Principles of genetics, Principles of plant breeding, crop physiology, Breeding of field & horticultural crops, Principles of biotechnology, Principles of seed technology are taught.
Importance of the courses in agricultural education:
All the courses in agricultural botany were conducted either in laboratory or field according to their necessity. In the ‘Environmental Science’ course the knowledge of the environment, environmental life, ecosystem and biodiversity is taught to students so that they will understand the seriousness of environmental changes, environmental degradation and disasters caused due to change in environment. In ‘Principles of Genetics’ course through knowledge of genetics is given to the students so that they can understand laws of inheritance of particular character in plant, reproduction in plant at genetic level, chromosomal changes and genetics of most of the crops. Course ‘Principles of Plant Breeding’ provides an opportunity to learn different breeding principles and breeding method in self and cross pollinated crops. Through knowledge of biochemical process occurring in plants and their effect on plants is taught to the student in Crop Physiology course. In addition to this, technical knowledge of courses like Breeding of Field and Horticultural Crops and Principles of Seed Technology will improve technical skills in students making them competent educated agriculturist.
This department is also engaged in different extension activities to disseminate new technologies in remote areas of Beed district for farmers. Students continuously motivated to attend national level tours, symposiums, seminars and trainings for getting practical real site.
